Since I’ve decided on what theme my project will have a theme around the 60’s I decided to look into typefaces. To get a general idea of what I can do, as well as inspiration I decided to look onto different media that would appear during the 60’s. This would include book covers, movie posters, advertisements and vinyl covers for music. I chose to go this route because it would be the best way to reflect the design choices of that era, and what influenced the designers.
After the wars in the 60’s there was a rebellion towards cultural norms, which means that during that time, Sex, drugs and were more popular than ever. The art and design during this era reflected just that, involving more vivid colours, asymmetrical experimental and grunge abstracts.
The ’60s would be considered to be the decade of America's psychedelic movement, this was shown in not only music but art and design, as well as fashion and literature as well. A few influential people of this era are:
A graphic designer and film-maker famous for his design of film title sequences, movie posters and corporate logos. He’s known for works with titles such as Carmen Jones (1954), The Man with the Golden Arm (1955), North by Northwest (1959), Vertigo (1958) and Psycho (1960).
After his Debut with Carmen Jones, Bass realised the potential of title sequences, and if incorporated with the right audio and visual sequence, can help set the mood and theme at the opening of a film.
A few logos of his are the Kleenex Logo, Girl Couts Logo and AT&T.
